Barcoo Shire Council on its way to becoming major user of renewable energy
Media Release 7 April 2009
Ingenero’s Solar Challenge is gaining momentum with the announcement of two additional solar energy plants to be installed for the Barcoo Shire Council. The new projects will feature a 30 kW system installed at the Windorah Cultural Centre and a 10 kW installed at the Windorah Sports Centre.
The two new systems will accompany the 30 kW system at the Jundah Sports Centre and the 2 kW system at the Jundah Administration Centre, which will be installed by Ingenero by mid 2009.
Ingenero’s Solar Challenge is about moving councils towards a sustainable future and how Ingenero can help them by going solar. With the aim of having 20 councils become major users of renewable energy by 2010, Ingenero is committed to making it happen.
Founder and CEO Steve McRae is pleased with Barcoo Shire Council’s commitment to the challenge and their commitment to being an example to their community and other councils.
“Not only is using our Power Purchase Agreement model to purchase renewable energy a smart business decision, it is also a huge demonstration of Barcoo’s commitment to sustainability within the shire,” he commented.
“The facilities they have chosen to mount the systems on are largely used by the community, setting the example of living sustainably with a highly visible display of their commitment,” he said.
Barcoo Shire Council CEO, Michael Parker is pleased to be involved with Ingenero in the development of solar energy initiatives at Windorah.
“Two Council owned premises will be involved, the existing Sports Centre, and the new Community Centre. The installations will provide Council with solar energy for use on the buildings, with any excess being sold to the energy retailer,’ he said.
"Council is pleased to be taking the lead in the use of solar power in Jundah and Windorah , in partnership with Ingenero,’ he finished.
Via Ingenero’s web based performance monitoring systems, EcoWatt, Barcoo Shire Council will be able to monitor every one of the four systems from anywhere in the world. EcoWatt will give the council real time access to their solar systems at work and will allow them to teach their community, staff and stakeholders about their sustainability commitment.
